David Bakan challenges the commonly held view of Freud that he was a patently secular, rationally and scientifically-orientated intellectual, educated in modern culture and with only a modicum of formal Jewish education. He argues that Freud was influenced in his major and revolutionary life work by a mystical tradition that he seemed to know little about, and which, as a mysticism, would be antithetical to science.
